Mid Century Modern In....Cameo Shores??
The other day The Modern Beachcomber took me down to Cameo Shores in Corona del Mar to look at some of the MCM homes. I was a bit skeptical, I mean, who lives there except old clueless people? Well, once again I learned something new and was proven wrong. There are some GREAT examples of modern home design in Cameo Shores, especially the oceanfront places. AND, it is a great testament to the staying power of mid century modern design; the places looked great then, they look great now!
Attn First Time Home Buyers
Attention first time home buyers: Blueprint Magazine's current issue has a pull-out section entitled "The Guide To Buying A Home". The pull-out is in handbook form and it is awesome! It explains all the jargon and walks you through the whole process in a very empowering way.
The first time buying a home can be very confusing at times and this is a great tool to overcome that. Reading this would be a great 1st step in home ownership. We will place soon on our website so you can download in pdf form.

Comme des Garcons LA Pop Up Store
This is Comme des Garcons' first pop-up store in the U.S. and they chose LA.
Tucked away in the downtown banking district with the no sign, hard to find usual fashion logic. They are one of my favorite brands and the clothes are impeccable.
I heard the clothes had been held up in customs and are now in the store.

New Gotcha Book Party
Gotcha is the latest brand to throw their hat into the book publishing ring. In its day, Gotcha ruled. Problem is, that day was over 20 years ago....I believe Perry Ellis now owns Gotcha and that they bankrolled the book concept. I know Mike Morville and Kevin O'Sullivan were responsible for a huge portion of the book and I am looking forward to seeing it this Thurs at the party. Bring it on till the break of dawn! Woo Hoo 80's Style!!

Louis XIV Band - Attn Vintage David Bowie Fans
OK, I have been trying to embed a song for like 30 minutes and I give up.....and the reason for that is a song from Louis XIV called "Air Traffic Control", especially the Out Of Oxygen Mix. Simply said, it is AMAZING! It sounds soooo much like vintage Bowie. And who does not like that?? A review on itunes said you would like the band if you like Bowie, ELO and Queen. Um, hello?? I heard it first on KCRW and loved it from the get-go. Give it a listen on itunes.

Chelsea Lately!
We photographed Chelsea Burggren's home for Damsel Magazine yesterday. Chelsea + Jason have great style and the home totally reflects that. Stephanie Lauren shot the home, she was awesome.

12@ELDEN Construction News
OK, the dutch doors on the models were installed, they look great! The interiors have drywall! The french doors are in as well, the homes are shaping up nicely! We should have models ready in about a month.

12@EL Neighborhood Update
PZ and I had lunch the other day at Bangkok Corner. It was recommended to us by Taylor Whisenand from SALT Optics. This Thai place is right around the corner from 12@ELDEN, located at Wilson and Newport Blvd corner. You could walk to there in about 2 minutes from the homes. The food was awesome! Inside is decorated in typical strip mall fashion....but they do have this nod to mid-century modernism with their orange wall and 50's clocks. Weird! But weird in a good way.
I love neighborhoods and homes where you can WALK to places. It is such a drag to have to climb into your car every time to do anything. I am liking the Elden spot more and more.

Live Free in Daily Pilot
Michael Miller from the Daily Pilot wrote a piece about our "Live Free" promotion at 1.7 Ocean.
Says Michael:
Pete Zehnder and Steve Jones want so badly to see the Westside redeveloped that they’d give housing away there for free.
And for six months this year, they plan to do exactly that.
The owners of Bettershelter, a Costa Mesa developer that builds affordable housing, opened a condominium complex called 1.7 Ocean last summer on Bernard Street. Zehnder and Jones sold the first 10 units in the complex easily — but with the housing market dragging, they’ve come up with a special incentive to lure buyers to the last two.
The program, known as “Live Free,” allows residents to move into the two-bedroom units and not pay a penny for the first six months. The bungalows are priced at $519,000 each — the lowest price in the complex — but for that first half-year, the Bettershelter owners will foot the entire bill using the money they made off the previous 10 sales. If the customer prefers, Bettershelter can also use the money to drive interest rates down or put it in a rebate check.
“Everyone reads so much negative press [about the housing market] that they’re scared to come out,” Zehnder said. “They feel they should not be in the market at this time. We want to tell people it’s a very smart time to be in the market.”
The Live Free offer is set to expire Feb. 28. Zehnder and Jones have gotten a diverse mix of homeowners at the first 10 units, but the buyers tend to be singles or childless couples. In addition to two bedrooms, the bungalows feature single bathrooms, one-car garages, private-entry patios and even small yards.
Overall, the owners hope to target first-time home buyers at 1.7 Ocean — and they want to take some of the stigma off the Westside, an area often associated through the years with crime and poverty. Jones and Zehnder both serve on the board of the Westside Business Culture, a committee dedicated to spurring economic development in the area.
“The typical buyers are looking for the Eastside of Costa Mesa,” said Zehnder, whose firm is also constructing an Eastside bungalow project on Elden Avenue.
The 1.7 Ocean project did make history a few years ago when the owners purchased a rundown apartment complex and began converting the units into condominiums. Planning Commissioner Eleanor Egan and Principal Planner Claire Flynn said the conversion project was the first in Costa Mesa since the 1980s, at least.
Since then, the city has gotten a number of proposals to convert apartments into housing, but Egan said 1.7 Ocean remained unique in its homey design.
“It’s a nice project,” she said. “I think people really like having their own little bungalow with a little bit of garden to tend.”

How Big Is Your Carbon Footprint?
How big is your carbon footprint? Hell, I have no idea what mine is. With the amount of time spent in my car, I am sure it is gnarly. But a recent article in the New York Times titled "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You" shows that a suburbanites' footprint is much greater than their urban counterparts. Now, in Orange County we have all seen that example repeated over and over again with the lawns, the SUVs, the McMansions and just the general excess. AND, this is something we are addressing with our new development, 12@ELDEN.
Not only have many of our building practices have sustainable tenets, many of our features in the community will be geared towards well, just not being so excessive.
