Gregory Crewdson’s Graveyard of Italian Cinema

From Flavorpill:
"Gregory Crewdson is world renowned for his elaborately staged color photographs — shot with Hollywood actors and large crews — that psychologically reference the movies of such iconic filmmakers as David Lynch, Alfred Hitchcock, and Stephen Spielberg.

However, his latest series of photographic prints, Sanctuary, which was shot the back lots of Rome’s famous Cinecittà film studios, takes a strikingly different point of departure, offering artificial, cinematic realms — devoid of any human presence — in a state of melancholic ruin."

I have been a fan for a long time and love this new work!
Nice and creepy, bravo!

Phoenix At Hollywood Bowl

I was having dinner with a friend of mine, getting caught up.
I knew he was working on large scale lighting design, had not seen any of his work in a long time.
"What have you been working on lately?", I asked.
He replied, "Oh, we did the Phoenix concert at the Hollywood Bowl...."
My mouth just about hit the ground.....I was there at the show that night and could NOT believe how insane the lighting was. Small taste of it below.

Good job Peter!
Bravo!

Surf's Up

A recent book review in the New York Times on "The Wave, In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean":

"What’s as tall as a small office building, snaps large vessels in half and inspires a small tribe of brethren to strap on fiberglass and launch themselves into an unholy maelstrom for a glimpse of transcendence? Giant waves. The bigger the better — or way worse — depending on who’s talking.

The author pushes the scientists on the big question: Will global warming lead to stormier oceans and bigger waves? With varying degrees of hesitation — because the data is not in to confirm a long-term trend, not because they are global-warming deniers — the answer is a resounding yes.

Scientists do know, however, that average wave heights rose by more than 25 percent between the 1960s and the 1990s, and insurance records document a 10 percent surge in maritime disasters in recent years. From 1990 to 1998 alone 126 vessels were lost, along with more than 600 lives."

On the corner of Santa Monica Blvd and Sierra Bonita in West Hollywood, an apt building consisting of 42 one-bedroom apartments sized at 620 square feet each.

Designed by Tighe Architecture, this building does NOT look like affordable house, which indeed it is.

Bravo, looks great!

A Renovation That Preserves Decay

A recent article in the New York Times on the "Harmony Club", a 20,000 sq ft building in Selma, Alabama that was built in 1909.

The 10 year renovation has left much of the decay intact with the restoration described as "neo-Gilded Age steampunk".
The motto here: “If if's not big, old, heavy, and obsolete, they don't want it.”

Result: Fantastic!
